Oor Space Youthy supported the local band Radio Silence with their successful bid to the Youth Lag Fund from YouthBorders.
The band have put the fund to good use and now have a great local rehearsal space at The Drill Hall, access to their own music equipment, and have generated a real buzz at youthy over the gigs they have lined up over the next few months too, so watch this space!
YouthBorders supported our Winter Family Support Package which allowed us to support local young people most in need for whatever reason - Christmas time is wonderful for many, but it can also add financial pressures that families cannot afford.
As a result of the Winter 2023 funding we were able to support 49 young people and their families with the provision Tesco vouchers to alleviate some of the financial pressures they were facing. This project worked hand in hand to support the Scottish Borders Council Tackling Child Poverty Delivery Plan.
Our Summer 2023 project was co-created alongside young people, with the aim of maintaining relationships, food, a safe space, and access to youth work.
During our summer provision, we provided extensive support for some young people and their families, and began creating strong partnerships with WhoCares Scotland, Children and Young People’s Centre For Justice (CYCJ), and made links with Scott SBC, Children and Families Social Work, and the Children’s Reporter (SCRA).
This was to ensure that the young people we were supporting were treated with dignity and respect in line with GIRFEC, UNCRC, AND THE PROMISE.
Young people from Oor Space Youthy were successfully received a Step Into The Arts award.
Their project is about helping young people who feel socially excluded by the community to express themselves, it’s a change for them to re-image what the community think of them, and provide a platform for young people to participate and have their voices heard.
Through the creative arts, young people will get the chance to share their story, their point of view, and what it feels like through a young person’s lens.
Through this multi-project platform, they are asking everyone to Step Into Their Art, and walk a mile in their shoes because they are ‘Mare Than Gid Fir Nowt’
Thanks to a grant from Youth Scotlands Generation Cashback Fund, we were able to continue our open access youth cafe provision to ensure young people have access to something to eat. There are pockets of deprivation in and around Peebles, and many young people have low attendance at school, however Oor Space is a space where they can reconnect with adults in a positive way.
In partnership with SBC & YouthBorders, our Pilot Youth Cafe Project was a huge success - We would go as far to say it's the most used Youth Cafe in Scotland…
Out of the 250 young people registered at Oor Space Youthy, 65 of face barriers to their development, during our pilot project we produced over 800 free meals with an average weekly attendance of 55 young people.
For some young people, our youth cafe is about more than just food, it’s about feeling welcome in a community space, it’s given them a sense of belonging, and provides accessible support thats meets them where they are at.
Thanks to 8 young people from Oor Space Youthy who pitched an idea to Youth Scotland at their Inspire Day in 2022, we now have the foundation for an annual Family Fun Day! Their idea was to have a family day where everyone could come together and have fun, a day that didn’t cost money and a day where young people could be valued for the important contribution they make in our community. It was to be a day with no worries, no stress and no pressure. They recruited more eager, hardworking and determined young people and literally smashed it out the park to plan and deliver the most incredible Social Action Event, receiving Dynamic Youth & Saltire Awards for their time and commitment!
Thanks to funding from YouthBorders, we delivered a Summer 2022 Activity Programme! This included 3 drop-in sessions, and 3 trips for 10 to 14 year olds. Sessions were free of Charge, and included lots of fun filled activities, dinner, and opportunities such as kayaking, swimming, beach trips, park trips, and much more.
Our program as aimed at supporting and maintaining relationships, as well as providing young people the opportunity to see their pals and build connections before going back to school.
